Privacy Policy

We don’t share contact information you send to us with anyone. Frankly, we don’t know how to make money from doing that, and even if we did, it wouldn’t be a cool thing to do. We use any information you submit to us simply as a way for us to share news with you. We send occasional email updates, and each of those include a link to unsubscribe at the bottom. We don’t like email spammery any better than you do, and we never want to be accused of spreading the stuff around. If you’re having problems getting emails from us to stop, please don’t hesitate to yell at us via comments (at) shipindex (dot) org and we’ll make it stop. We promise.

Terms of Use

  1. ShipIndex.org is a happy place, and we aim to keep it that way. However, life being what it is, we have to lay down a few ground rules. By using ShipIndex.org, you indicate your acceptance of these terms. If you violate these Terms of Use, we will be forced to block your access to our site without a refund, and you won't be allowed to come back -- which isn't something either of us wants, is it?
  2. You agree that password access to the ShipIndex.org site is limited to a single person and his or her immediate family members. You agree not to share this access beyond your immediate family (in-laws, while visiting your house, are OK), or distribute your password beyond your immediate family. (The in-laws can use the site when they're visiting you, but when they finally go home, they need to get their own username and password.)
  3. Institutions need to subscribe using our institutional access process, which offers IP-based access to the database. This is much easier and happier for you and your patrons. Contact us at sales (at) shipindex.org for more information about institutional access, and to set up a free trial.
  4. Our service is offered exclusively for human-powered access. Spiders, bots, scrapers, rippers, and all other synonyms for that are not allowed. You are responsible for preventing automated crawling of our site by any tools you control or users you are granting access to, and occurrences of such things can result in access being revoked and getting a very angry call from us with lots of scowling and finger-wagging.
  5. Harvesting our data without a blood oath (or, alternatively, an appropriate legally-binding contract) in place with us is also a big conniption-inspiring action. Re-publishing it will incite apocalypse. That means: you agree to neither harvest nor republish the data at ShipIndex.org.
  6. We make our best reasonable effort to keep our data accurate and complete, but some errors will get through, so we can't promise perfection. This is harder than it looks. Really. Mistakes happen. If you tell us, though, we'll do our best to correct errors quickly, and you'll receive our eternal gratitude. We try to get it right, but we are human (other than go-ahead power on the apocalypse).
  7. You agree that if we're unable to settle any disagreements in a neighborly fashion, this agreement will be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of New York.
  8. These terms of use might change without warning, and the new ones will still apply to you. Don't worry, we won't suddenly make crazy demands, we try to keep these reasonable. These are reasonable, don't you think? I mean hey, note the use of lower case - we're not shouting at you the whole time like some other agreements do.
  9. Finally, we should mention that though we want this site to be awesome, and work hard to make it that way, we are offering it "as is". So if somehow it is involved in some kind of mess-up, even if there is some kind of fall-out from said mess-up, we can't be held responsible.

Other than that, let's all just play nice, and we hope and expect that ShipIndex.org will make it easy for you to find out lots more about the vessels you're researching. If you have questions or comments, please send them to comments (at) shipindex.org.

Remember Me
ShipIndex.org tells you which books, magazines, and online resources mention the vessels you're researching. With 143,937 entries in the free database and 1,278,431 entries available with premium access, you're bound to find useful information here.
Here's a hint for better searching:
Keep the name simple -- don't include "hms" or "ss" or things like that. If the name has multiple words, try searching just one word at a time.
