The SS Madiana was a passenger and cargo steamship built in 1892 for the Quebec Steamship Company. The ship was constructed by Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company in Govan, Scotland. Initially used for the Quebec-Montreal route, the Madiana was later transferred to the West Indies service and operated between Canada and the Caribbean. During World War I, the ship was requisitioned by the British Admiralty for use as a troop transport and hospital ship. In 1917, while returning to the West Indies, the Madiana struck a mine and sank off the coast of Ireland. The crew and passengers were safely rescued by nearby vessels. The sinking of the Madiana marked the end of the ship's service and she remains as a notable maritime incident in history.
